Department of Security
The University has a fully-fledged Security department. The department is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of the entire University community both within the University and the areas around it. Security personnel are well trained to provide Security Services and are on duty 24 hours a day.
The Security department also continually disseminates information regarding the security situation both within and outside the University. This is done through emails, the noticeboards and of late through text messages (SMS) sent to student cellphones.
Vision
Create and maintain a community culture that places a priority on safety and security- meaning that the likelihood of loss or harm is low and a sense of personal security and well-being are high.
Mission
Create and maintain a safe and secure environment where teaching, researching and campus life can thrive and succeed.
Values
The Security Department at United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) places a value on integrity, professionalism, honesty, knowledge, communication, collaboration and cooperation and will incorporate these values in safety and security measures.
The University has put in place the following security measures;
Orientation Briefing: When students report on campus during orientation, they are normally given a brief on security matters both within and outside the University. There are two sessions: one for all incoming students and a second one specifically tailored for international students. Some of the information given to the students includes the places to visit in town where it is secure and have elaborate security arrangements.
Entrance: The University has a strict vetting system at the gate. One cannot enter the University before being cleared by security personnel.
Buildings: All buildings are armed with motion detectors and security alarms as well as security desks near entrances manned by security officers.
Transport: Our students are assured of security while travelling to and from the university right from the gate to the main road and also to the Town Centre. USIU-Africa has contracted a transport service provider to shuttle the city center and shuttle van to ferry students around the university environs.
Patrol: The contracted security firm patrols within the campus and its environs. We also have a good working relationship with the local police whereby police patrol daily within USIU-Africa and the entire neighborhood. Indeed there’s a local police station (Kasarani Police Station) not far from the campus.
Security Advisory – Tuesday, October 30, 2018
The USIU-Africa security department continuously collaborates with the other security agencies in assessment of both specific risks and general threats to the security of the university community.
Terrorism is a main threat being perpetrated by extremists linked to the Al Shabaab, a militant group that has carried out attacks in Kenya in response to Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia. There have been a number of attacks in Kenya in recent years, particularly in North Eastern, Coast and Nairobi Regions.
In light of the above security concerns, we advise each one of us to continuously adopt a higher level of vigilance and to promptly report any suspicious persons or activity straight away to nearby police station or any security officer on campus. We also recommend that you continue to exercise care and vigilance when you visit crowded places or the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi. While in the university level, we expect each one of us to produce student or employee Identification Card (ID) as the case may be on demand. This will enable the security team to identify you positively.
Theft cases are also on the rise likely occasioned by the hard economic times. We advise each office or vehicle user to ensure proper locking of doors. Please remember that any unlocked office premise or car remains prone to incidents of theft.
Finally we wish to remind you that all parking slots designated for our colleagues and guests who are abled differently should not be used by any other person. If you park in such slots, we will have no option but to tow your vehicle to the police station.
It is our hope that this information is helpful. We will keep monitoring the security situation and advise you accordingly.

- Walking is a major part of living in Nairobi. As in any urban area, you should take certain precautions to stay safe:
- Stay in well-lit, well-traveled areas and avoid shortcuts.
- It’s always safer to walk with someone/groups.
- Stay near the curb. Avoid bushes, alleys, and dark entryways.
- Avoid using foot bridges at odd hours.
- Think you are being followed? Walk quickly to areas where you see lights and people.
- If a car appears to be following you, turn and walk in the opposite direction or walk on the other side of the street.
- Have a safety plan. Think about what you would do in a threatening situation.
- At night, take public transportation or a taxi.
- Take time to learn your friends’ associates, homes including their background- do not say, 'so and so is just a friend and I know him/her by one name’.
- Decline hiking car/motor cycle lifts from suspecting acquaintances/ individuals.
- Avoid any public demonstration and any other civil disobedience.
- Leave contacts of the person(s) you are going out with to friends in case they need to contact you in an emergency. Note also M/V or M/cycle reg. no(s).
- Should you happen to find yourself in a kidnapping situation, here are the tips from an article posted on the security page on our website
Ride Keen
Public transit system is not always safe, as in any city, the crowded buses and subways can be a haven for purse-snatchers and pickpockets. Here are a few tips for riding smart on public transportation:
- Contracted transport service providers (ZUKA) and shuttle van ferry students around the university environs and city center.
- For ZUKA: make payment direct to their a/c. ZUKA bus office located near USIU-Africa transport office.
- Be aware of your surroundings and of other passengers, especially when traveling late at night.
Live Keen
Students who are careless in securing their apartments often find themselves the victims of robberies/thefts. Here are a few key ways to keep your home safe:
- Keep all doors/windows locked when you are not at home or sleeping.
- Get to know your neighbors very well.
- Do not let strangers into your room. Check the identity of all visitors (if in doubt) with the caretaker.
- Safeguard your key.
- In case you mislay your keys? Notify the landlord/caretaker to change the locks.
Building Security Gadgets/Checks
- All buildings are fitted with security kits: smoke detectors, motion detectors, burglar alarms, fire alarms and sensors and fire extinguishers. Please do not interfere with any such equipment including water hydrants in the compound.
- Fire drill practices are conducted regularly for all the university community; cooperate accordingly.
- Take note of fire assembly points on campus.
- Comply with safety consideration rules and emergency exiting which require that you must vacate an area/building when a fire alarm sounds.
- Avoid lifts, instead use the stairs and emergency exit doors.
- Sign in/out laptops for security reasons.
- Bags are searched upon exit.
Lost and Found Items/Security Alerts
- Do not leave your property unattended in classrooms, library, computer labs, etc.
- We normally circulate lost and found items/any security alert(s) by email to the university community. Please do check your mails for information.
- Lost and found items are recovered from Administration Block Security Desk or from the Office of the Head of Security.
- If you need to reclaim such found items, please produce your ID(s) at the time of reclaiming.
