Shaping Your Future: Senior Experience Class Held A Guest Lecture On The Power Of Personal Branding
By Wendy Oluoch
Recently, the Senior Experience class led by Prof. Charity Muraguri, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the Chandaria School of Business, hosted Musalia Mwenesi, the Managing Director of the Etiquette and Protocol Institute of East Africa (EPIEA), an image consultant, certified trainer & coach, and digital entrepreneur, as a guest speaker. Musalia uses his platform to educate and inspire individuals across Africa on topics such as personal branding, social capital, and career positioning.
During his session, Musalia shared insights from his personal journey, providing practical guidance on building a personal brand both online and offline. His lecture was based on real-life
lessons that resonated strongly with students preparing to transition into the professional world. He emphasized that personal branding goes beyond professional necessity — it reflects an individual’s identity and lasting impact. He noted that a strong personal brand can advocate for a person even in their absence; it is what others say about someone when they are not in the room. He added that a personal brand represents who an individual is, the mark they leave behind, and the promise that shapes expectations and builds influence.
Presenting the necessary steps to building a strong personal brand, Musalia encouraged the students to be authentic - to keep it 100% real - and to conduct honest self-reflection, including a personal SWOT analysis to understand their strengths and areas for growth. He also advised them to know their audience, reminding them that they are not for everyone, but they are for the right people; therefore, identifying their target demographic is essential. He further emphasized the importance of visibility, urging the students to ensure they are seen and heard by showing up consistently and making their presence known. Additionally, Musalia encouraged them to deliver on their promises, noting that a brand is a promise - and trust is built by following through on commitments. Finally, he underscored consistency as the defining factor of a strong personal brand, telling the students that there are no “days off”; they must keep showing up and delivering excellence.
Students left the session with a clearer understanding of how to craft a personal brand that reflects their values, strengths, and ambitions. Musalia’s practical advice underscored the importance of authenticity, consistency, and visibility in building a professional reputation that leaves a lasting impact.
