Grounding Climate Change: Knowledge, Politics, and Justice
The drought that struck northern Uganda – and much of the East African region – in 2017 was subject to multiple interpretations. On the one side, climate scientists explained that the drought could be traced to global warming, representing a “new normal” of decreased and irregular rainfall in East Africa’s climate. At the same time, communities in Uganda’s drought-affected region explained that it was caused by deforestation, driven by rampant charcoal production controlled by military and state elites. In this paper, I try to develop a multi-scalar approach to climate change that can take both of these understandings into account in order to expand the possibilities for how we frame climate knowledge, politics, and justice.

Our Speaker:-

Adam Branch is Professor of International Politics and former director of the Centre of African Studies at the University of Cambridge. He received his PhD in political science from Columbia University and his BA from Harvard University. Prior to joining Cambridge, he was Senior Research Fellow at the Makerere Institute of Social Research in Kampala. His current research focuses on the political ecology of sustainable energy and climate change adaptation and mitigation, with a regional focus on East Africa. He is author of Displacing Human Rights: War and Intervention in Northern Uganda and Africa Uprising: Popular Protest and Political Change (with Zachariah Mampilly).
