Accelerated Kenya Sign Language

Preamble
The course aims at providing an enabling environment by teaching Kenya Sign Language (KSL) knowledge and communication skill proficiencies in production and reception so as to empower hearing people to be able to interact and communicate with deaf Kenyans.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the nature and potential of the visual gestural medium, its place in communication and how it is related to the spoken medium.
  • Develop an increasing fluency in both reception and production of KSL.
  • Develop increase ability to interpret into KSL and out of KSL
  • Improve conversation with people who are deaf
  • Expand KSL vocabulary through its use in different language learning situations
  • Develop good attitudes towards the deaf culture and community.

Participants
The course is open to:

  • Any hearing person interested in learning KSL.
  • Parents with children who are deaf
  • Teachers in schools for the Deaf,
  • Social workers,
  • People working in NGOs,
  • People who work in the police force,
  • People who work in the judiciary etc.
  • Or anyone in a place that offers services to the public so that they can be able to serve people who are deaf using their language – KSL.

Program Structure – 5 Weeks (full time or part time)
Teaching Methods
To achieve maximum interactive engagement with the learner the Training sessions shall be designed strategically with interludes as follows;

  • Face to face training each day of the week.
  • Assignments and exams within the training period
  • Video shooting and video watching

Program Fees: Ksh 35,000

Certification
At the end of the English Language Intensive Course, students are awarded a certificate of completion from United States International University-Africa.
