The Carnegie Africa Diaspora Fellowship Program hosts virtual workshops on Online Pedagogy

The Carnegie Africa Diaspora Fellowship Program, in collaboration with USIU-Africa and University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) has been holding virtual workshops on Online Pedagogy every Tuesday and Thursday beginning on July 8, 2021, with the trainings expected to go on until the end of the month.

The trainings are being carried out by selected fellows from the Carnegie Program, including the following:

  1. Dr. Joselyn Chenane Nkogo, an Assistant Professor of Assistant Professor at the School of Criminology and Justice Studies in the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. She is hosted by Dr. Simeon Sungi and she will be developing a new Master's degree in Criminal and Transitional Justice.
  2. Dr. Onesimus Otieno, a Professor Biological Sciences at Oakwood University. He is jointly hosted by Dr. Phillip Machoka, Director, USIU Online and Dr. Phillip Maiyo, the Vice Chancellor at UEAB. His project is to develop capacity for online teaching and learning at both institutions.
  3. Dr. Henry Wambuii is a Professor of Comparative Politics and International Relations at University of Central Missouri. He is hosted by Dr. Njoki Wamai and together, they plan to develop curricula for short courses in Human Rights. Last week, Prof. Wambuii hosted a webinar titled “Human Rights and the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Impact Analysis.”

The past four workshops have been attended by 489 participants from partner institutions including USIU-Africa, the University of Eastern Africa- Baraton, Kenyatta University, Daystar University and Thika Technical Training Institute. The workshops have covered topics like:

  • Transitioning to Online Course Delivery;
  • Curriculum Alignment 101;
  • My Syllabus – The Building Blocks;
  • My Syllabus – Bringing things to life.

For the remainder of the month of July, the workshops will be held virtually on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00am – 12:00 noon. Future workshops will cover topics such as;

  • Inspiring student participation and engagement in online discussions;
  • Assessing students online;
  • Critical thinking tools for your classroom;
  • A virtual clinic for one-on-one support in developing online course modules.
