USIU-Africa Radio enters a new era: A vision for the future of broadcasting
By Nikky Shillingi
On November 27, USIU-Africa Radio embarked on a bold new chapter, as a revitalized and passionate team of 18 talented individuals took the helm at the radio station. This fresh cohort, representing a diverse range of Schools, marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the station—one that promises to redefine the landscape of student-run broadcasting.
The transition into this new phase was not only a celebration of fresh talent but also a testament to the dedication of those guiding the next generation of broadcasters. The team underwent an intensive period of orientation and hands-on training, led by industry professionals and esteemed alumni, including Racheal Waithaka, Denver Ochieng, Teddy Eugene, and Henry Njuguna. Their invaluable insights, coupled with the mentorship of the university’s distinguished academic leaders—Dr. Geoffrey Serede, Dean, School of Communication, Cinematic and Creative Arts, Dr. Keziah Githinji, and Robi Koki Ochieng—have laid the foundation for what the station envisions to be a transformative journey in broadcasting excellence.
The training sessions were comprehensive, covering a broad spectrum of skills that are crucial in today’s rapidly evolving media world. From media ethics to crisis management, from show handling to effective team-building strategies, the team has been equipped to meet the demands of modern-day journalism. One key takeaway from this intensive training was the importance of versatility. In an era where the media landscape is constantly shifting, the ability to adapt and thrive in any environment is more important than ever. As we move forward, the team is committed to becoming well-rounded journalists—ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way.
In addition to strengthening core broadcasting skills, the team will place strong emphasis on digital innovation. With the advent of new media, the station is focused on harnessing the power of podcasting, content creation, and multimedia production. The station’s state-of-the-art facilities and equipment provide the perfect platform for this expansion. Moreover, the university’s studios at Lillian Beam are currently undergoing renovations, and the team is prepared to embrace the challenges of the digital age with confidence and creativity. The goal is not only to keep pace with emerging trends but to lead the way in producing content that resonates with both the community on campus and the broader public.
Looking ahead, the future of USIU-Africa Radio is brimming with potential. As the team gears up for the launch of the revamped station in January 2025, they are excited to introduce the fresh faces and voices that will define this new era. With ongoing mentorship and continuous training, the team is committed to evolving and innovating at every step.
