The USIU-Africa Journalism Alumni Association elects new officials
By Dr. Ruth Owino
In a heartfelt gathering on the 3rd Commemoration of Joe Kadhi Day, alumni of the Journalism and Communication program at USIU-Africa came together for a cocktail evening to honor the legacy of their revered trainer, Joe Kadhi. Known as a champion of truth and integrity in journalism, Kadhi’s teachings have left an indelible mark on generations of journalists, many of whom gathered to share memories of his profound influence on their careers.
The event was both a tribute to Kadhi’s contributions to ethical journalism and a celebration of the vibrant alumni community he helped shape. Alumni shared stories of Kadhi’s commitment to upholding journalistic standards, his unwavering insistence on accuracy, and his ability to inspire future media professionals to pursue the truth at all costs.
In addition to the reflections and camaraderie, the evening featured an important milestone for the alumni network: the election of new officials for the USIU-Africa Journalism Alumni Association. Teddy Otieno was elected Chairman, joined by Corazon Sefu as Treasurer and Wandimi Givens Kachero as Secretary. Ex-officials Dr. Dan Omondi and Keziah Githinji were also recognized for their ongoing contributions to the association. Teddy Otieno steps into the leadership role following the tenure of his predecessor, Joel Chacha. In his remarks, Otieno expressed gratitude for the strong foundation laid by Chacha and his team, whose dedication and commitment have elevated the association. "You’ve set the bar high, and we are inspired by the legacy you’ve established. I look forward to building on this momentum and strengthening our alumni community,” Otieno said.
The gathering underscored the alumni association’s commitment to advancing the values Joe Kadhi championed throughout his life and career. It also reflected USIU-Africa’s broader mission to promote excellence in journalism and foster a network of professionals who uphold the highest standards in their work. As the Journalism Alumni Association moves forward under its new leadership, the event served as a reminder of the power of community and shared purpose in honoring Kadhi’s legacy and advancing the field of ethical journalism.
