On November 15, the Kenya Model United Nations (KMUN) Club held its second annual mock debate, a significant event in the club’s calendar. Themed “Reimagining Sovereignty: Balancing State Interests and the Global Pursuit of Global Justice,” the event brought together over 1,000 delegates.
Delivering the keynote address was the Chief Guest, Hon. Justice Luka Kiprotich Kimaru, on behalf of her Ladyship Hon. Chief Justice Martha Koome, who emphasized that true social justice requires human rights, inclusivity, equity, and accountability, and that nations must uphold global standards of dignity and fairness. He urged young people to stay vigilant, defend progress, and act as agents of change while the judiciary remains committed to protecting justice and constitutional order.
The event recorded strong delegate turnout across multiple committees, reflecting a high level of interest in international relations and policy dialogue. The debate sessions were hosted in different venues around campus and conducted in a structured and orderly manner, guided by experienced chairs who ensured adherence to the United Nations’ rules of procedure. Moderators facilitated a balanced flow of debate, allowing fair speaking time and encouraging inclusive participation. This contributed to vibrant discussions, motions, and well-informed arguments.
The highlight of the event was the award ceremony, where three USIU-Africa students were recognized for their outstanding performance. Fridaous Laleye, who represented India in the General Assembly for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Lofula Manasseh, a first-year Bachelor of Science in Finance student representing Rwanda in the General Assembly for the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), both won the Most Diplomatic Delegate Award. Ynez Njanja, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Information Systems & Technology student representing Nigeria in the General Assembly for ECOSOC, received the Honourable Mention Award.
This mock debate was an impactful, memorable, and transformative event that provided a platform for young leaders to develop critical skills, engage in global discourse, and contribute to constructive problem-solving.
