School Of Pharmacy And Health Sciences Marks World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week With Renewed Call To Action

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness webinar held on November 22, 2025.Each year, the global health community observes World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) on November 18-24, a campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance and encourage best practices among the public, health professionals, and policymakers. At USIU-Africa, this week serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility in safeguarding the effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobials.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat. This leads to prolonged illness, higher medical costs, and increased mortality. With the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials driving AMR, universities play a critical role in educating communities and shaping responsible behaviors.

In alignment with the 2025 theme, “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (SPHS) continues to champion AMR awareness through teaching, research, and community engagement. Faculty and students actively participate in antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, surveillance projects, and research on rational medicine use—efforts that support national strategies spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and global agencies.

This year, SPHS is spotlighting student-led research that highlights gaps in antibiotic use among young adults, including findings from campus-based studies showing self-medication and incomplete dosing as contributors to resistance. Faculty are also amplifying public health messages on proper prescription use, hygiene, vaccination, and the importance of seeking professional medical advice before taking antimicrobials.

As part of WAAW, the School has encouraged the university community to join the global “Go Blue for AMR” movement, symbolizing solidarity in the fight against resistant infections. Through continuous awareness, responsible use of medicines, and collaborative action, USIU-Africa remains committed to playing its part in safeguarding the future of healthcare.

Antimicrobial resistance is a shared challenge—together, we can stop its spread.
