The Birth Of A Legacy: Giving Back Through Pen And Paper
By Nicholas Amessouwoe
When a human being turns a year old, we celebrate life. When an animal turns a year old, we mark its survival. When a plant turns a year old, we admire its growth. But when Nicholas Amessouwoe, a 4th-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student, celebrated the first anniversary of his second book, he honored it by giving back.
Two weeks ago, Nicholas Amessouwoe donated 10% of all the revenues he earned through the sale of his second book, titled Library of Poetic Heritage (LOPH), to Educate Your Own Initiative (EYO Initiative), a student-led Financial Aid Initiative at USIU–Africa. Through this contribution, he hopes to ensure that other dreamers, just as he once was and still is, receive the opportunity to learn without interruption. Because, according to him, giving back is more than just charity; it is an investment in the soil that nurtured his dream when all he carried was faith and ambition. It is a reminder that service is not separate from success; it is its extension.
This donation is in honor of a pledge he made when LOPH was launched a year ago, during which he promised to give 10% of its revenue back to USIU–Africa, the community that shaped him into who he is today. “As Library of Poetic Heritage marks one year since its release, I celebrate a book full of light and love, a living piece of timeless expression, as priceless as the dream that conceived it,” he says.
Where others may see just a book with numerous pages, Nicholas sees the identity of his craft, God’s blessings in his words, the lessons in his journey, the fingerprint of his purpose, and the unfolding mission of his life taking shape. LOPH is his triumph over fear, his mastery of rhythm that heals and seals hidden wounds without leaving a scar behind.
Reflecting on his writing journey, he said that creativity, much like growth, is often born from a place of uneasiness. “Five years earlier, when I launched my very first, I had no idea where the path would lead,” he states. “During my early publication days, nothing was clear to me, but I knew one thing for certain: my inability to predict the future was my superpower. Because had I known the heights I would reach five years later, the wonder, the mystery, and the indescribable excitement of the journey might have faded,” he concluded. He notes that throughout this period of uncertainty, passion has guided him, and his love of literature has helped him move past doubt and continue learning.
“I know what it means to fly without wings. I know what it takes to swim against the tides. I know how frustrating it is to walk without a clear path ahead. I know how it feels to hold an expensive dream in empty pockets. I know how frightening it is to take a leap of faith without knowing how safe the landing will be. And I know how disappointing it is to start from scratch when the world expects you to be soaring, “ says Nicholas.
Beyond his passion, Nicholas writes to change mindsets, spread positivity worldwide, and give back and work together with everyone to make everyone's dreams possible, building a home away from home, where one person's struggle becomes everyone's responsibility, and no one is left to walk alone.
Nicholas continues to write and is currently working on three books: one on mental health, one on Pan-Africanism, and one on love. Each will be a torch, illuminating the path toward a more conscious and compassionate world.
