Prof Juliana Namada Exemplifies Research Excellence With Groundbreaking And Award-winning Publications And Competitive Grants

Photo: File photo.Research remains at the forefront of USIU-Africa's mission as a higher learning institution, with faculty leading the charge in advancing knowledge and addressing global challenges. Prof. Juliana M. Namada, an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and the Chair of the Department of Business Administration in the Chandaria School of Business, exemplifies this commitment through her groundbreaking research and success in securing competitive grants.

Prof. Juliana holds a PhD and a Master's in Business Administration, specializing in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi, and a Certificate in Learning Design and Technologies from Arizona State University in the United States of America. She serves as the chair of the Institutional Scientific Ethics Review Committee (ISERC), a review committee in charge of research quality at USIU-Africa.

Her research interests are in strategic management, competitive advantage, and online teaching & learning. Prof. Juliana has published widely in the Africa Journal of Management, International Journal of Strategy and Automation, African Journal of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Journal of Cooperative Studies, Journal of Organizational Psychology, and Journal of Management & Organization. She has published a total of 33 papers in Refereed Journals and 7 book chapters. Her notable recent publications include a 2025 theoretical paper co-authored with Knapp, J.R., and Doughan, W., titled "Dynamic Ethical Capabilities in Place and in Time," which seeks to extend the theory of dynamic capabilities by adding ethical dynamic capability. In 2023, she co-authored with Kiarie B.K., “Towards Authentic Online Assessment of Learner Performance at United States International University-Africa, a MasterCard Foundation e-Learning Initiative Working Paper Series on teaching and learning. Additionally, in 2021, Prof. Namada collaborated with Karimi, J.N., on research titled "Student Perceptions on Factors and Effect of Drug and Substance Abuse: A Case of United States International University-Africa," published in the African Journal of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (AJADA).

Furthermore, Prof. Juliana is a member of the Academy of Management (AOM), the Africa Academy of Management (AFAM), the Comparative & International Education Society (CIES), and the British Academy (BA). She served as a global representative for Africa in the Academy of Management from 2016 to 2019. She is the inaugural fellow of the Junior Faculty Fellowship of the Africa Journal of Management, which funded her Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the United States of America in 2018. She currently serves as an Executive Director for Africa at the Africa Academy of Management, a position she has held for two years.

Additionally, Prof Juliana has supervised 10 Doctor of Business Administration students and 43 Master of Business Administration students. She is the current patron of the university’s Research Club. She serves as a reviewer for the Academy of Management, the Africa Academy of Management, and the American Journal of Industrial and Business Management.

In terms of awards and recognition, Prof. Juliana was awarded a Thesis Writing Grant by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Junior Faculty Fellowship by Africa Journal of Management (AJOM), and the Best Instructor in X-Culture Business Simulation in Africa in 2019. In addition, she has won several internal and external grants, including one in authentic assessment in online education and drug addiction among university students. She was also recognized for her outstanding contributions to Open Access Publishing by the USIU-Africa Library and Information Center for the period 2024-2025. She is the Principal Investigator (PI) in an internal grant awarded by USIU-Africa to investigate the effect of drugs among university students.

When it comes to service to the profession and community, she is a Trained Peer Reviewer by the Commission of University Education (CUE) and serves as an External Examiner for Makerere University Business School (MUBS). At the community level, she serves on several boards in secondary schools in her rural county. She served as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) of Shrine of Mary Help of Christians - Don Bosco Upper Hill and was a Moderator of a small Christian community for seven years.
