On September 24, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program hosted a graduation dinner for the Class of 2025, themed “Golden Dawn.” Held at the Hyatt Regency, the event celebrated the second cohort of 104 graduating Scholars, honoring their resilience and dedication throughout their academic journey.
The dinner was a memorable gathering that brought together scholars, their families, university leadership, and representatives from the Mastercard Foundation and partner institutions. The celebration began with heartfelt reflections from parents, who spoke about the difference that the Program has made in their children’s lives. Gladys Some, the guardian of Nichodemus Kilunda, a scholar, highlighted how the program has opened doors of opportunity for Nichodemus. Echoing these sentiments, Maureen Agwona’s father, Samuel Agama, shared his pride in his daughter’s growth and accomplishments, thanking the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for the life-changing transformation in his daughter’s journey and helping her become the person she is today.
The graduating Mastercard Foundation Scholars also had their chance at the stage. Representatives Eric Ayamba and Abigail Ayimbisa spoke with joy about their journeys at USIU-Africa and the dreams they are carrying forward. They reflected on the friendships and sense of community they’ve formed, the lessons and skills they’d gained, and encouraged their fellow graduates to keep learning, keep growing, and never lose sight of what has brought them this far.
Speaking during the event, Prof. Mwendwa Ntarangwi, Vice Chancellor, applauded the scholars for their determination and achievements, underscoring the role of the Mastercard Foundation in reshaping education and creating opportunities that will continue molding future leaders
The guest speaker, Lars Tushuizen, Deputy Representative of Operations, United Nations Development Programme, congratulated the graduating Mastercard Foundation Scholars, noting the potential they carry within them. “This graduating class carries with them academic excellence, along with stories of resilience, ambition, and promise. Each of you here represents the kind of leadership our continent needs, leadership grounded in service, knowledge, and determination to better communities,” he stated. “The opportunities that await are vast, and I believe each of you is prepared to conquer them with courage and vision,” he concluded.
In her remarks, Ivy Mwai, Acting Director, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa, commended the graduating class and emphasized that the evening was a celebration not only of their achievements but also of the families who had walked alongside them. “Tonight, it is a tribute to your hard work and perseverance. It is also a moment to honor the sacrifices and the belief of those who stood with you,” she said. Ivy further added that the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program was created on the belief that when young people are given access to education, mentorship, and real opportunities, they rise and make a difference. “To the parents and guardians, your support has been the anchor of this journey. And to our graduates, I hope you continue to lead with empathy, courage, and a vision that lifts others as you rise,” she added.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating the accomplishments of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars. A total of 41 Scholars received the Outstanding Academic Performance Award, while 22 were honored with the Distinguished Service Award.
