Preparing For The Global Job Market: Are You Ready
By Yvonne Kageha
The university prides itself on producing graduates that can efficiently compete in the global job market, solve problems on a global scale, and lead institutions worldwide. For this, the university provides academic programs, local and international field trips, exchange programs, seminars, guest lectures, networking events, CEO roundtable sessions, innovation nights, workshops, and so much more, just to give students comprehensive education that molds them into effective leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators of tomorrow. The question is, are you taking advantage of these opportunities? Do you know the job market demands and are you ready for them?
The world of work is shifting rapidly as employers, both in Kenya and globally, seek for more than just a degree. The hiring process is now skills-based where employers assess hands-on skills an individual possess rather than just looking for academic qualifications. Don’t get me wrong, academic achievements are important, but they should be complemented by practical abilities. So, you are a Summa Cum Laude, that’s awesome, but do you possess the skills and the hands- own experience? The employer wants to know, what you can do. For some organizations, the first phase of the interview process entails a skills test where candidates have to take an exam to test their skills and only those who attain the required pass mark proceed to the next stage of the interview. Therefore, as a student, consider how you can build practical skills alongside your coursework. Take advantage of available opportunities and seek for help from faculty and staff where possible to achieve this.
Furthermore, in the current rapidly changing technological world, digital fluency is no longer an option, but a necessity. Employers are looking for graduates who can apply various digital tools in their day to day work functions. A common question that appears in many interviews these days is: ‘What do you think about AI, and how should it be applied in your work or operations?’ So, don’t think of them as tech tools that require people trained in the tech fields. Whether you’re applying for a job in finance, healthcare, media, or agriculture, digital skills in areas such as data analysis platforms, digital communication, and even basic AI applications, are now essential.
Have you ever explored digital tools and AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Canva, Power BI, Google Workspace, etc.? If not, now is the time to start.
In addition to practical and technical skills, it is essential to possess soft skills. While the other two will get your foot in the door, the latter will help you grow in your role. If you are aspiring to be a leader and/or an entrepreneur someday, it is important for you to be able to communicate effectively in writing and in person, be adaptable to change and quick to learn new things, be able to think critically and offer solutions, and be a team player by working well with people from all backgrounds. At a glance, these skills seem easy but they distinguish great leaders from the rest.
Lastly, you need to be tuned on to the global market scene. Remember, you are not only competing locally but on a global scale. Therefore, as a graduate, you need to understand both local and global realities. Every business/organization is looking to expand beyond the local territories and with the addition of remote work that has seen people seek for jobs beyond their country borders, one need to possess a global mindset. This means being aware of issues like sustainability, data privacy, digital ethics, and intercultural collaboration.
The current local and global job market is competitive but also full of opportunities. You need to be ready for it and the time to prepare is now! Utilize available resources such as the Innovation Center to gain digital and tech skills. Attend available non- academic programs that the university hosts to boost practical and soft skills. Develop a culture of continuous learning and be up to date about trends in your field.
