On July 19, a section of students from Film Production and Directing, Animation, Journalism, Finance, and International Business Administration, attended a private screening of the film “Heads of State,” hosted by the Kenya Film Commission in collaboration with the Akuna Group. Held at Century Cinemax, Two Rivers Mall, this event brought together over 300 distinguished leaders, creatives, and students from various institutions across Kenya. The event aimed at providing a platform for creative engagement, industry exposure, and educational enrichment for students passionate about film and the broader creative economy.

The screening of Heads of State starring EDRIS ELBA and JOHN CENA was not only entertaining but also a masterclass in storytelling, sound design, and visual composition. Experiencing the film in a professional cinema setting allowed students to appreciate the immersive sound and high-quality visuals that define cinematic excellence. The day also featured cultural entertainment which entailed a dance and musical performance by Uganda’s trending duo from Kasese, Mr. Kawato and his son Dexter the Rapper. Their performance added a vibrant cultural touch to the event, showcasing the intersection of film and live entertainment.

Beyond the entertainment, the event served as a practical learning experience for the students, allowing them to gain insights into the logistics and planning efforts behind successful film events, the role of various disciplines such as technology, business, catering, and entertainment in the film ecosystem, and the importance of community engagement and inclusivity in creative events. Additionally, this occasion provided a platform for students to network, exchange ideas, and establish potential future collaborations.

This experience was a powerful reminder that film is not just a form of art, but a multidisciplinary industry that thrives on collaboration. The function was inclusive, catering not only to filmmakers and film students but also to those interested in the business, technical, and cultural aspects of the industry.

The event facilitated learning and growth leaving the students inspired, informed, and more connected to the Kenyan film landscape. The university remains committed to providing access to such initiatives with the aim of enhancing student exposure to real-world film industry practices, foster creativity and innovation and, strengthen ties between academia and the creative industry.
