ITERU Medical Center: A Beacon Of Dignified Healthcare In South Sudan
By Jemima Oloo
The university is committed to promoting the discovery and application of knowledge, the acquisition of skills and the development of intellect and character in a manner which prepares students to contribute effectively and ethically as citizens of a changing and increasingly technological world. At the heart of Juba lies Iteru Medical Center, a modern and well-equipped hospital, founded by Aker Deng, an alumnus of Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, Class of 2009. The center stands as a beacon of hope and a model of healthcare excellence in the region.
Behind Iteru Medical center is a story of resilience and innovation by Aker who established the medical facility after battling Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder. Her vision was ignited after having to seek proper medical care in Nairobi with the lack of proper physiotherapy services in South Sudan. Iteru was birthed to provide proper healthcare at home.
Today, the vision is a reality. The center offers dignified health care services, with inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services. This Level five hospital, outfitted with the latest equipment and services, is one of the only two hospitals in South Sudan equipped with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), CT scan machines, X-Rays, and diagnostics centers among other modalities. The center is a trailblazer as it is the only hospital in the country offering Speech Therapy. The Center is closing the gap for residents in the region who have previously had to seek medical care in other countries and is committed to giving specialized and world-class service.
Iteru Medical Center is one of three branches in Juba, strategically positioned to increase accessibility for patients across the city. With a growing team of highly trained medical professionals, the hospital is steadily building local capacity by investing in the continuous development of its staff and integrating modern medical practices with community-centered care.
Under Aker Deng’s leadership, Iteru has also begun exploring partnerships with global health organizations and academic institutions to enhance service delivery and knowledge exchange. This forward-thinking approach not only strengthens South Sudan’s fragile healthcare system but also reaffirms the powerful impact of alumni who use their education to transform lives and shape the future of their nations.
The story of Iteru Medical Center is not just one of personal triumph and national impact, it is a testament to the transformative power of education. Madam Deng’s journey from USIU-Africa to becoming a trailblazer in South Sudan’s healthcare landscape reflects the university’s mission to nurture ethical, visionary, and globally minded leaders. Her legacy serves as a shining example of how alumni continue to shape their communities, champion change, and embody the university’s enduring commitment to service, innovation, and excellence.
