The Persons With Disability Club Hosts Town Hall For Students With Disabilities

By Caleb Mukhwana

On June 20, Persons with Disability club in partnership with Disability Inclusion Department, organized the Summer 2025 town hall for students with disabilities, bringing together the university fraternity to highlight the importance of inclusion. Held on campus, this student-led event provided a platform for open dialogue and allowed participants to celebrate leadership, ownership, and co-creation among students.

With a desire to shape their campus experience, the students actively took part in impactful conversations where they shared ideas, voiced their concerns, and proposed relevant solutions. What stood out in these discussions was a call for students with disability to be more involved in the planning and decision-making processes in the various university sections and functions for both internal and external events. Seeking clarity on Departmental roles, the students called for improved communication and better coordination especially when it comes to delivery of sports, mentorship, and student transition programs.

The session also featured conversations on challenges faced by persons with disability, and identified barriers to inclusion. Throughout the event, students asked questions, provided insights and strategies and also demonstrated willingness to co-lead solutions.

The participation of university leaders and staff made the event even more impactful as they provided feedback, assurance and affirmed university’s commitment to molding leaders by supporting academic, social, and leadership journey of each student. This event is one of the many initiatives that the university has taken to create an inclusive environment that allows all students, regardless of their abilities, to be seen, heard, and supported to thrive.

This event proved that when students are empowered to lead, they shape both their future, University’s, and the world at large. It served as a testament of the university’s mission to cultivate a sense of being part of a community and a desire to be of service to it by creating an environment where every student has the tools, the voice, and the community to grow.
