On May 10-11, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program hosted African day festivities bringing together participants from all the cohorts for lively field games, stirring artistic showcases, and the exciting launch of two iconic events that will elegantly continue the legacy of African Day.

Held on campus, the celebrations began in the field with friendly competitions. With unparalleled sportsmanship, the participants competed in football, volleyball, and other team challenges that connected different families in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program in a fun, welcoming manner.

As the first day drew to a close, the Winnie Mandela Family won the moment, demonstrating their teamwork, perseverance, and unity. Their spectacular performance earned them ten gold medals, a championship trophy, and a cash prize of KES 10,000. A key contributor to their win was Joseph Ociti, whose outstanding ability and determination allowed him shine forward, earning him the well-deserved accolade of Top Scorer of the tournament.

The Kenneth Kaunda Family trailed closely behind, securing ten silver medals and KES 7,000, while the Nelson Mandela Family secured third place with ten bronze medals and KES 5,000. The Best Female Soccer Player Award went to Victoria Sokale Lagu of Kenneth Kaunda Family while Abaasi Mutesi of the Winnie Mandela Family won the Best Male Player.

On the second day, the activities were held indoors featuring talent and storytelling sessions. Participants showcased their talents in music, dance, spoken word, and more, commemorating a true picture of Africa’s dynamic cultural tapestry. The performers were awarded for their talents and ability to move, inspire, and unite. The Best Represented Country award went to Burundi who captivated the audience with their mesmerizing performances, striking traditional attire, and identifiable national pride.

One of the evening’s highlights was the official launch of two flagship events set to replace Africa Day, beginning Summer 2025. The first event is the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Talent Day (STaD), an energetic forum designed to embrace the Mastercard Foundation Scholars’ cultural and artistic talent. Slated for Week 8 of every semester, STaD will feature and give the platform to the untapped creativity across the Mastercard Foundation Scholar community. The other event is the Mastercard Foundation Scholar Football League, a new football league that will integrate competition with community, teamwork, and well-being, nurturing leadership and friendship among the Mastercard Foundation Scholar network.

The festivities concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, a symbolic gesture that warmly welcomed the new Mastercard Foundation Scholars into the family, marking the beginning of an important journey together moving forward.
