Background

The Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch Intervarsity ADR Moot Competition was established to provide students with a transformative experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), focusing on mediation and negotiation. It is an initiative of Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution (WADR), an organization dedicated to empowering ADR professionals, particularly women, across Africa. WADR promotes non-adversarial dispute resolution mechanisms and fosters a community of skilled mediators and arbitrators.

The moot competition is named in honor of Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, a distinguished jurist and former judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). She is globally recognized for her commitment to peacemaking, mediation, and arbitration. Her dedication to advancing ADR methodologies serves as an inspiration to aspiring legal professionals.

USIU-Africa has been strategically positioned as a center of excellence in ADR, providing a robust academic environment that nurtures the next generation of dispute resolution practitioners. With a strong focus on international law, trade, and conflict resolution, USIU-Africa is the ideal host for the 2025 edition of the moot competition, reinforcing its commitment to practical legal education and regional integration.

Introduction

The Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch Intervarsity ADR Moot Competition 2025 is an event that brings together law and dispute resolution students from across Africa and beyond to engage in simulated mediation proceedings. This year’s competition will focus on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the key role of mediation in resolving trade and regional disputes.

Building on the success of previous editions, the 2025 competition will be hosted at USIU-Africa’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SSHS) in collaboration with Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution (WADR). The competition aims to provide students with a unique platform to develop practical mediation skills, engage with leading ADR professionals, and contribute to Africa’s growing culture of alternative dispute resolution.

This event presents a unique opportunity for partners and sponsors to support the advancement of ADR education, trade dispute resolution, and youth empowerment, while also gaining visibility among the next generation of mediators, legal practitioners, policymakers, and business leaders.
