On March 21, USIU-Africa hosted the World Poetry day celebrations under the theme ‘Poetry for Peace and Unity’, bringing together renowned scholars and literary figures, students, poets, and other literary enthusiasts to share in the beauty of spoken word and verse. In addition to the university community, representatives from PAC University, Ruaraka Academy, and Mountain View School were also in attendance.

Gracing the event was Prof. Miriam Maranga-Musonye, Lecturer and Chair of the Department of Literature at the University of Nairobi who explored the historical role of poetry in promoting peace, and social cohesion in the society. With relatable examples, she explained that words, when thoughtfully composed, can promote mutual respect and understanding, and facilitate change among people and communities.

Dr. Judith Jefwa, an Assistant Professor of Literature at USIU-Africa shared the same sentiment as she reiterated that poetry is a powerful tool of expression that can build bridges, facilitate healing, and ignite a sense a belonging. Additionally, she urged young poets and literary enthusiasts to use their voices as powerful tools for unity and social justice.

Other than the speeches, the attendees got to enjoy and showcase their talents and explore creativity through gripping performances such as recitals, spoken-word, and poetic expressions. Whether it’s the traditional poetry, modern slam poetry or the bilingual recitations, each demonstrated the rich linguistic diversity of Kenya.

The theme ‘Poetry for Peace and Unity’ continued to resonate even as the day progressed with participants immersing themselves in insightful and enriching discussions on topics ranging from inclusivity, to reconciliation, to cultural comprehension, to bridging societal gaps through the art of poetry. They explored historical injustices, forgiveness, hope, and other deeply personal topics.

A highlight of the event was an open-mic session, that allowed spontaneous poetry lovers to share their own verses exploring storytelling to the fullest.

As the day drew to a close, one thing was evident; this event was more than an appreciation of the art of poetry; it amplified voices, celebrated diversity and inclusivity, and recognized the role of literature in creating a more peaceful world. Additionally, participants were encouraged to keep writing, performing, and using poetry as a means of advocacy and storytelling.
