Despite being Deaf, Peggy has not let this define her or limit her potential. With the support of a sign language interpreter, she has navigated her academic journey with determination and resilience. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Accounting at USIU-Africa, Peggy took a bold step outside her comfort zone when she joined the Summer School at Sciences Po University last year, an experience that shaped her perspective on leadership, environmental issues, and global collaboration.

At Sciences Po, Peggy immersed herself in transformational leadership, learning what it takes to drive meaningful change in today’s world. As one of the first Deaf students in the program, she knew she had a unique perspective to offer. The summer school, which draws students from around the world, offered a deep dive into leadership strategies that emphasize change, adaptability, and positive impact.

“I learned that being a leader requires more than just charisma or position; it demands a willingness to study, research, and continually grow. I am passionate about helping others achieve their full potential, so these insights into leadership will be valuable in helping me engage and lead my peers,” she said.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the program was the deep dive into environmental issues and sustainability. Peggy gained a clearer understanding of how leadership plays a crucial role in tackling climate change and other environmental crises.

"My studies have helped me understand the interconnectedness of environmental challenges and the role that leadership plays in addressing them. Looking towards the future, I hope to use the skills I've acquired to assist other Mastercard Foundation Scholars at USIU-Africa in understanding the global context of environmental issues. By equipping my fellow Mastercard Foundation Scholars with a broader perspective, I believe together, we can work to create meaningful solutions. I recognize that leadership in today’s world requires an understanding of both global and local challenges, and I'm eager to bring this knowledge back to my community," she says.

During her time in France, Peggy also had the opportunity to interact with Mastercard Foundation Scholars and other students from various cultural backgrounds. Engaging with peers from all over the world allowed her to appreciate the richness of different cultures and perspectives.

"This exchange program wasn't just enriching for my personal growth. It expanded my understanding of how to lead in a globalized world. For me, one of the most rewarding parts was connecting with other Mastercard Foundation Scholars. I cherished the opportunity to share aspects of Deaf culture and offer my perspective on leadership as a Deaf person," she said.

"Additionally, my experience at the Summer School reinforced my belief in the power of knowledge and continuous learning. The training I received has strengthened my resolve to keep growing, both as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and as a leader. I understand that leadership isn't a destination, but a lifelong journey of self-improvement and learning. I am committed to using my experiences to empower others, especially persons with disabilities to achieve their full potential," she added.

Looking ahead, Peggy aims to apply her knowledge of transformational leadership and environmental studies to create meaningful change on her community and the world at large. Her journey proves that with support and a passion for learning, barriers are navigable.
