UNICEF’s People and Culture Team shares career success secrets with Mastercard Foundation Scholars
By Silas Otieno
Success in the workplace extends beyond academic credentials—it's shaped by mindset, values, and interpersonal skills. With this understanding, Mastercard Foundation Scholars at USIU-Africa gathered at the Auditorium on Friday, January 31, for an intensive workshop on workplace professionalism led by UNICEF's Human Resources team. The event, organized by Dolly Mwiti and Valentine Livutsi from the Program’s Transitions Office, was designed to prepare Mastercard Foundation Scholars for their professional futures.
The comprehensive workshop covered workplace ethics, communication strategies, corporate culture navigation, and career development tactics. Through interactive sessions, scholars gained practical insights from industry professionals.
Anita Verma, People and Culture Officer at UNICEF, emphasized the multifaceted nature of professionalism, stating, "Professionalism is not just about showing up; it’s about how you show up – your attitude, your ethics, and your ability to collaborate. Mastering these elements will distinguish you in any workplace.”
The session emphasized fundamental areas such as workplace ethics and integrity, effective communication, etiquette, time management, and managing workplace challenges. The participants took part in role-playing activities, Q&A sessions, and interactive discussions with HR professionals.
Achetou Bazie, People and Culture Manager at UNICEF, highlighted the importance of ethical behavior, noting, “Integrity is the foundation of trust in any professional setting. When you commit to honesty and accountability, you build a reputation that opens doors to greater opportunities.”
Communication skills were also a key focus during the session. Abishagi Odiyo, Senior People and Culture Associate, shared her perspective: “The way you communicate shapes perceptions. Whether it’s through email, a presentation, or a simple conversation, being clear, concise, and respectful will set you apart.”
The training proved to be a transformative experience, leaving participants with new insights in regard to their careers. One Scholar, in their vote of thanks, expressed gratitude for the practical insights gained. "This training has given me a clear understanding of true professionalism," they shared. "I now recognize the power of workplace ethics, communication, and time management. I look forward to applying what I have learnt today to shape the trajectory of my career,” they added.
