Mastercard Foundation Scholar Mentors at USIU-Africa inspire students at Mathari Mixed Secondary School
By Silas Otieno
What happens when dreams meet the power of mentorship? On January 22, Mathari Mixed Secondary School became a center of inspiration as Mastercard Foundation Scholar Mentors at USIU-Africa empowered students with practical tools for academic excellence and personal growth. Organized by Wambui Cheche and Dolly Mwiti, the event was an attestation to the transformative impact of mentorship on young minds.
The mentorship program aimed to inspire and empower students to excel academically while building their self-confidence and resilience. Through lively and engaging sessions, Cynthia Maukira and Silas Otieno shared actionable strategies for achieving academic excellence, while Sebongile Ts'osane and Prisca Mkwachula delivered insights for promoting self-esteem.
The mentors presented practical tips, including time management strategies, active learning techniques, and the value of collaborative study. Their interactive approach kept the students engaged, with many asking questions and sharing their academic aspirations.
Cynthia Maukira opened the session on academic excellence with an inspiring message: “Excellence is not about being perfect; it’s about progress. Even the smallest victories, like completing a single sub-topic, lead to success.” She emphasized the importance of setting realistic goals, developing a consistent study routine, and seeking help when needed.
Building on this idea of progress, Silas Otieno introduced students to strategies for effective time management and self-discipline “Success is a product of intentional actions and it happens when you manage your time effectively,” he remarked.
“Remember, discipline is the bridge between your desires and reality. It’s about consistently doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it. Consistency and discipline will get you further than occasional efforts.” he added.
In the second section, Prisca Mkwachula and Sebongile Ts'osane presented on self-esteem, encouraging the students to value themselves and embrace their individuality. "You do not define yourself by your challenges," they said. "Just as you are, you are enough," they emphasized.
Prisca Mkwachula added, “Self-esteem is your shield in a world full of noise. Protect it by choosing positivity and surrounding yourself with people who uplift you.” The mentors incorporated real-life examples and engaged students in reflective exercises, inspiring them to identify their strengths and recognize their self-worth.
Wambui Cheche, the Mastercard Foundation Scholar Mentors Program Coordinator, expressed her excitement and while speaking with the students, she remarked, “There are countless opportunities out there for those who work hard and stay committed, like scholarships that are within reach for students like you who dream big and take action.”
She went on to highlight the mentors as living examples of determination and perseverance. “Look at these incredible mentors standing before you. They were once students like you. They worked tirelessly, and today they’re here to share their journeys and guide you. Follow their footsteps, ask questions, and learn from their stories. Your aspirations are valid, and with dedication, you can achieve even more than you imagine.”
As the session concluded, one student's words reflected the spirit of the day: "Today, I’ve learned that I have the ability to accomplish everything I set my mind to and I’m walking away ready to face the obstacles with confidence.”
