Alumni Profile: Dr. Michael Kisilu

Dr. Michael Kisilu, an alumnus of USIU-Africa, exemplifies the university's motto, ‘Education to Take You Places.’ Holding an MBA in Strategic Management from USIU-Africa, alongside a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism Management from Moi University and a PhD in Hospitality & Tourism Management from Kenyatta University, Dr. Kisilu is a distinguished professional with over 25 years of service to the university and the broader community.
Since February 2019, Dr. Kisilu has served as the Head of Alumni Relations at USIU-Africa, leading the strategic direction of the Department. His exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication have propelled the Alumni Relations Department to prominence. Under his guidance, the Department received the Alumni Association of the Year Award for three consecutive years (2022, 2023, and 2024) at the East Africa Employability Summit & Uongozi Career Awards, organized by the Corporate Career Academy (CCA).
Dr. Kisilu's leadership has been instrumental in strengthening alumni engagement while fostering connections between alumni and students. In recognition of his impactful work, he was awarded the Alumni Service of the Year Award during the 2024/25 USIU-Africa Student Leadership Annual Awards.
Dr. Kisilu’s tenure at USIU-Africa spans over two decades. Prior to leading Alumni Relations, he served as Housing Manager, overseeing the university’s residential facilities. From 2005 to 2013, he contributed as an adjunct faculty member, combining teaching and administrative expertise. In 2024, he celebrated his 25th work anniversary, receiving the 25-Year Long Service Award, a testament to his enduring commitment to the institution.
Beyond USIU-Africa, Dr. Kisilu has made significant contributions on both national and continental platforms. In 2015, he was appointed to the Kenya Utalii College Council, a leading hospitality and tourism training institution. He later joined the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Governing Council, where he played pivotal roles, including Chairing the Technical Committee. Under his leadership, Kenya became the first country in Africa’s history to undertake a 2nd Generation Peer Review, a milestone presented at the African Union Summit in 2017. Dr. Kisilu also chaired the Finance Committee of the Board and served as Acting Chair of the Audit and Risk and a Member of the Human Resource & Management Committee as well.
Back in his home County, Dr. Kisilu has served on the Boards of Kambiti Primary School and Mbaikini High School. He also joined the Tourism Professional Association (TPA) in 2021, contributing to its Education and Training Committee.
Dr. Kisilu’s career reflects the values of excellence, leadership, and service. His work has left an indelible mark on alumni, students, and the community, embodying the transformative power of USIU-Africa’s education.
