The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa hosts the Mastercard Foundation team during the second week of pre-university orientation

Recently, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa hosted the Mastercard Foundation team on campus. The visit, which took place on Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23, 2024, saw Foundation representatives Joseph Munyambanza, Mimi Koranteng, Jedidah Kandagor, and Violet Nyambura engage with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars.

Joseph Munyambanza, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Partner for East & Southern Africa, met with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars in Cohorts 1-3, and shared detailed insights into transitioning from school into the world of work. Drawing from his personal experiences, Joseph shared his transition story, addressing the fears, challenges, and concerns he faced during a similar phase in his journey.

Joseph also engaged with Mastercard Foundation Scholars from displaced backgrounds from Cohorts 8 and 9, reinforcing the Foundation’s support for their unique journeys and the importance of resilience and community building.

The Cohort 9 Mastercard Foundation Scholars also had a session with Mimi Koranteng from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Communications team, who led an interactive session on the Mastercard Foundation’s brand guidelines and the art of storytelling. Mimi’s presentation highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Foundation’s brand while encouraging the Mastercard Foundation Scholars to develop their personal brands.

Mimi guided the Mastercard Foundation Scholars through the basics of effective storytelling, underscoring the need to connect personal experiences with broader social impact narratives. She also shared examples of how branding can be used as a tool for thought leadership, particularly within the context of the Foundation’s mission.

The visit concluded with a welcome dinner at Safari Park Hotel on Friday, August 23, 2024. The dinner provided a relaxed atmosphere for further discussions and networking among the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program team at USIU-Africa, the Mastercard Foundation team and the Cohort 9 Mastercard Foundation Scholars. Jedidah Kandagor, Technical Vocational Education & Training specialist at the Foundation, and Violet Nyambura from the Foundation’s Stakeholder Engagement and Events team echoed the sentiments shared by their Foundation colleagues during previous sessions.
