Sports Update - October 4, 2024

Hockey
On September 28, the ladies’ team had a Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) match at Kenyatta University against St Paul’s University and won 7-0. Later in the day, the same team faced Strathmore University and lost 2-0. On September 29, the ladies’ team faced Blazers at Dashmesh lost 2-0.
The men’s played against Strathmore the USIU-Africa sports grounds and conceded a goal.
Tennis
The USIU-Africa team had friendly match at the Mpesa Foundation grounds on September 28. However, the match was abruptly interrupted due to unfavorable weather conditions which made it impossible for the players to continue with the planned match.
Volleyball
On September 29, ladies’ team had their first Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) match against Kiriri Women’s University held at Kenyatta University. Despite a strong opening set, the team ultimately lost 1-3, with the score as follows:
- USIU-Africa 25-17 KWUST
- USIU-Africa 14-25 KWUST
- USIU-Africa 13-25 KWUST
- USIU-Africa 18-25 KWUST
The team exhibited outstanding service, reception, blocking, and communication throughout the game. The players were well-coordinated, supported one another and maintained their energy throughout the game. These elements were clear strengths of the team, contributing to their competitive performance in all the sets.
The team will continue to build on their strong communication and coordination while dedicating additional training sessions to ball control and finishing. Improving these aspects will allow the team to maintain consistency across all sets for better results in upcoming games.
Swimming
The USIU-Africa swimming team, the Dolphins, competed in the Nairobi County Aquatics Association (NCAA) level 1 swimming gala competition at Kiota School on September 28 & 29. Though unable to compete in the relays, the men’s and women’s teams did a commendable job in their individual events with great support from fellow team members cheering them on.
In the 50m breaststroke in the 19 & over category, Tyrone Agesa swam with a time of 40.37s ( a level 2 qualifying time) earning him a silver medal in the event, Jaimie Choge, claimed a bronze medal in the 100m individual medley in the 16–18 years category, Nashaepae Mucokialso earned a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle 19 & over category, while Tihila Kemboi secured a bronze in the 50m breaststroke in the 16–18 years category, Darlene Hunnipher had an impressive performance, winning bronze medals in four events: 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 50m breaststroke, in the 19 & over category. A notable mention was Sean Odera who secured 5th place in the 50m Backstroke in the 16 & over category and swam with a time of 40.36s which is a Level 2 qualifying time.
