Academic Scholarships at USIU

The United States International University (USIU) Financial Aid Office is committed to supporting the university achieve its Vision and Mission of providing quality all round education to a diversified population of students through its programs. By promoting Scholarship and helping students with Financial need meet their tuition costs. 
 
POLICY AND REGULATIONS FOR FINANCIAL AID
  • Where applicable, the Graduated Scale Point (GPA) System will be used to determine need.
  • Students who apply for need based Financial Aid programs will be required to provide all the necessary documentary evidence alongside their applications.
  • Financial Aide is not refundable to students under any circumstances.
  • Award of grants/ scholarships depends on availability of funds.
  • Fulfillment of all the Financial Aid application requirements is not a guarantee for the award of Aid.
  • Scholarships will be advertised in the major Kenya daily newspapers. Interested applicants can also contact the Financial Aid Office for further information.
  • All Financial Aid applicants will be notified about the status of their applications within seven days from the date of the interview (for continuing students) or upon admission (if new students).
  • Students may apply for more than one Financial Aid program depending on circumstances and eligibility. 
  • Unless specified, all USIU students who meet the required criteria are eligible for financial aid. 
  • Students of Kenyan nationality with financial need must apply for HELB funds if they qualify for the same.
  • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • Recipients of financial aid must maintain specified academic requirements to remain eligible. Students who their Cumulative GPA drops below expected standards but not below a cumulative GPA of 2.0 will be issued with a letter to that effect in the 3rd week of the semester.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

FULL USIU SCHOLARSHIP*
The Full USIU scholarships are advertised on the USIU website and in any of the two major Kenya Daily Newspapers (The Daily Nation and The Standard) in the spring (April) of every semester.  They are processed in the following summer (May) semester and awarded in fall (September) of every year. 

It covers the full costs of tuition, books, computer laboratory and room and board fees in the university hostels.
 
Applicants must:
  • Have sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (KCSE) not more than one year prior to the award.
  • Have attained a mean grade of B+ (Plus) or better, with at least a B plain in English and Mathematics in KCSE.
  • Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 and above to remain eligible.
 
 
PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP*
The partial scholarships are for female students only and are advertised on the USIU website and in any of the two major Kenya Daily Newspapers (The Daily Nation and The Standard) in the spring of every semester.  They are processed in the following semester and awarded in fall of every year. 

This scholarships covers tuition only.
 
Applicants must:
  • Have sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (KCSE) not more than one year prior to the award.
  • Have attained a mean grade of B or better, with at least a C+  in English and Mathematics in KCSE.
  • Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 and above to remain eligible.
 
 
DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS*
The university aims to reach out to specific vulnerable members of the society through the Diversity Scholarship.Through this the university aims at among other things:
  • Promote education and development among the vulnerable members of the society. 
  • Assist bright but needy students from vulnerable populations gain university education. 
 
Scholarships For the Underrepresented Communities*
There are two (2) tuition only scholarships for the underrepresented and underprivileged bright students from Arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) regions of Kenya, and one (1) similar scholarship for applicants from informal settlements in the neighborhood of USIU.

Applicants must:  
  • Have attained a KCSE score of B- (minus) or better. 
  • Be from the ASAL regions 
  • or informal settlements in the USIU neighborhood.
  • Correctly complete all relevant Financial Aid and Admission application and selection procedures.
  • Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 and above to remain eligible.
 
Scholarship For the Physically Challenged*
These are 2 full tuition Scholarships for qualified applicants who must use orthopedic appliances for movement. The Scholarships are based on academic merit and cover full tuition costs.
Applicants must:
  • Have attained a KCSE score of C+ (Plus) or better. 
  • Correctly complete all relevant Financial Aid and Admission application and selection procedures.
  • Maintain a cumulative G.P.A of 2.0 to remain eligible.
 
 
THE SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS
There are two categories of Sports Scholarship:
 
Sports Scholarship for Freshmen
This is a 40% tuition only scholarship for students in sports disciplines that are relevant to the university sports program needs. The scholarship is awarded to successful applicants upon admission and is renewable subject to the students fulfilling all the necessary requirements.
The scholarships are advertised in high schools, relevant events and sports organizations during the summer semester, processed fall semester and awarded in the following spring semester. Preference is given to students with national certificates
Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Become a USIU Sports ambassador in the relevant sport.
  • Maintain expected performance standards in the sports discipline
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 and above to remain eligible

Sports Scholarship for Continuing Students
This is a 25 % Sports Scholarship for continuing students who are not on the Sports Freshman Scholarship.  The main objective of this scholarship is to assist needy students with sporting talent pay part of their tuition costs.  

Applicants must:
  • Meet all other Financial Aid application procedures and requirements.  
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Must also maintain a GPA of 2.0 to remain eligible. 
  • Be enrolled in a university sports team.
  • Be recommended by the relevant Student Activities Sports Officials.
  • Attend all sports engagements.
 
THE VICE CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (VCSU)
This is a combined merit and need based 25% tuition only scholarship for continuing undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better.

Applicants Must:
  • Have demonstrated financial need.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 to remain eligible.
  • Be enrolled for three to four courses (9 to 12 units).
  • Fulfill all financial aid application and selection procedures.

CAMPUS WORK OPPORTUNITY (CWO)
The Campus Work Opportunity Program (CWO) also popularly referred to as “Work Study”, provides part time employment opportunities for full time undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. 

Applicants Must:
  • Complete the relevant Financial Aid application forms and processes.
  • Be continuing full time (3 to 4 courses or 9-12 units) undergraduate students.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • Be willing to work for 10-15 hours for a maximum of 195 hours per semester in any of relevant department in the university at the stipulated  hourly rate 
 
RESIDENT ASSISTANTSHIP (RA)
Applicants are selected through an interview process conducted by both the Financial Aid and the Housing Offices. Resident Assistants assist the Housing Officer in administrative duties in return for room and board in the university hostel. 
 
Applicants must:
  • Demonstrate ability to meet their tuition costs.
  • Be a continuing students with a minimum cumulative G.P.A of 3.00 or better and maintain the same to remain eligible.
  • Demonstrate leadership, organizational, decision-making skills, team spirit and a commitment to serve.
  • Be willing to serve for one year which is renewable.
  • Have positive evaluations from the Housing Officer for continued eligibility
 
SPECIAL NEED GRANT
The objective of this grant is to help students who have fallen into sudden financial hardships and are unable to pay their tuition fees. Causes of financial hardships may include the sudden death of the guardian, sudden withdrawal of sponsor from paying tuition fees or any other significant but relevant situation. It is not refundable to students for any reasons. Amounts granted will vary according to need, number of applicants and availability of funds. All students are eligible to apply. 

Applicant must:
  • Complete the relevant financial aid application forms and procedures.
  • Be a continuing full time student with good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0).
  • Provide a written statement explaining the circumstances for financial need. 
  • Provide a plan on how they are to meet tuition fees in the future. 

LEGACY AWARDS
The Legacy awards include the Family Tuition Discount award and the USIU Alumni discount award. Briefs on each of these grants are given below:
 
Family Tuition Discount Award 
This is a 10% tuition discount waiver granted in recognition of parents/guardians or sponsors who continue to support USIU.
Any three members of a family (parent(s) and children or three siblings) concurrently enrolled on full time basis in USIU are eligible.
 
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
  • The grant will be awarded after the third member of the nuclear family enrolls. Proof of blood relationship is required.  
  • Applicants must be full time students (9-12 units for undergraduates or 6-9 units for graduates).
  • Nuclear Family members (maximum 3) who are concurrently enrolled full time students are all eligible as long as they fulfill all the requirements for the grant.
  • Awards are to be granted on a first come first served basis. 
  • A cumulative G.P.A of 2.0 is required for continual eligibility.
 
USIU ALUMNI TUITION DISCOUNT AWARD 
This is a 10% tuition grant to children of fully paid up members of the USIU Alumni Association. The grant may be availed to eligible applicants upon admission.
 
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
  • Complete appropriate Financial Aid application forms.
  • Be children of fully paid up members of the USIU Alumni Association.
  • Provide the necessary evidence indicating relationship to a paid up Alumni Association member
  • Maintain a cumulative G.P.A of 2.0 and graduate students a GPA of 3.0 to remain eligible.

STUDENT AFFAIRS COUNCIL GRANT
This is a combined merit and need based 25% tuition only grant introduced by Student Affairs Council (SAC) for continuing undergraduate students. Only one grant will be awarded per academic year. 

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Be continuing undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be enrolled for three to four courses (9 to 12 units).

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CIVIL SERVANTS

The United States International University (USIU) is committed to supporting the government realize its academic goals by providing  5 partial academic scholarships that cover 50% of Tuition cost to Kenyan Civil Servants seeking to pursue their Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at USIU.

Criminal Justice is the government controlled systematic practice of applying laws for the purpose of social control in society; and for the prevention and lessening of crime; and using courts and legal procedure, which necessitates penalties and sanctions for law violations.

Application Requirements
Applications must be accompanied with the following :
  • Application letter
  • O’ Level Certificate
  • Copies of other relevant certificates
  • An essay detailing your background information and reasons why you deserve the scholarship. 
  • A recommendation letter from the employer (immediate supervisor or department head)
 
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE
These are 25% tuition only scholarships for eligible applicants seeking admission into the graduate programs offered at USIU.  
 
MBA SCHOLARSHIP ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE
There are six scholarships only per semester for the MBA program. A score of 550 or better in the graduate management Admission test (GMAT) is required.
 
MASTER OF ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
There are nine scholarships every year for the Counselling psychology, international relations and clinical psychology applicants. Top 9 applicants in GRE will be awarded.
NOTE:-Scholarships are awarded on competitive basis. In order to ensure a balanced distribution of scholarships among the eligible applicants, diversity factors will be considered.
 
GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP (GA)
The Graduate Assistant [GA] program is for full-time graduate students who have demonstrated financial need and good academic achievement. A cumulative GPA of 3.2 is required. Graduate Assistants assist faculty with research work, conducting seminars, and teaching selected classes for up to 20 hours per week for 13 weeks each semester.  

Positions for Graduate Assistantship are dependent on faculty needs and will be awarded on competitive basis. 

Applicants Must:
  • Complete appropriate Financial Aid application forms.
  • Be continuing full time masters students registered (two to three courses or 6-9units) per semester.
  • Fulfill all the Financial Aid application procedures
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better and maintain to remain eligible.
 
OTHER FUNDING PROGRAMS
EXTERNALLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
The university continues to seek partners to help fund the Financial Aid programs.  Below are some of the partners currently funding some of the Scholarships.  Please note that the availability of grants and scholarships depends on funding from sponsors.
 
Rattansi Education Trust Fund Grant
Funds are awarded in the fall semester of every year. The Rattansi Education Trust Foundation makes decisions on the amounts to be awarded to successful applicants. The awards may range from KShs.5,000/= per year to Kshs.100,000. The USIU Financial Aid Office notifies successful applicants as soon as the disbursements are received.
 
CFC Stanbic Scholarship
Applicants must apply through USIU, while selection will be done by CFC Stanbic Bank. The applicants of this scholarship should have a mean grade of B plain or better in KCSE. Successful candidates will be required to maintain a good academic standing (GPA 3.0) throughout the study period.
 
HIGHER EDUCATION LOANS BOARD (HELB)
Students of Kenyan nationality can apply for loans from HELB as long as they meet the required criteria. All eligible students with financial need should apply for this loan funds. For further information, please visit the HELB website (www.helb.co.ke).

BANK LOANS
Financial needy students and sponsors are encouraged to explore the possibilities of securing education loans from banks e.g. Masomo Education Loan from the KCB.
