Biographies of CEOs

1. ANDREW NEIL BULLOCH, MANAGING DIRECTOR, GLAXOSMITHKLINE

Mr. Bulloch is the Managing Director & General Manager Pharmaceutical Operations, GlaxoSmithkline Ltd, Nairobi. He graduated from the University of Southampton (1970-1973) with a BA (hons) in Politics & History. Andrew was a former Managing director, Glaxo Wellcome (Kenya) Ltd for 10 years. He also worked as an Export Director for Africa, Parke-Davis Afrique (a division of Warner Lambert Company) and he was responsible for the company’s businesses throughout Africa (excepting Nigeria and South Africa), which were worth some GBP20 million. Andrew’s interests include politics, economics and international relations (particularly pertaining to Africa), literature, diving, sailing, fishing, wildlife and traveling in the bush.

2. TERENCE DAVIDSON, CEO, KENYA COMMERCIAL BANK LIMITED

As the captain of the second largest bank in Kenya, Mr. Davidson is credited with repositioning KCB through a major transformation program to rebuild business and contain and restructure large non-performing loan portfolio. Terry moved the organization from a loss making position to profitability. He raised KShs 2.45 bn in new capital through a rights issue in 2004, which diluted Government’s shareholding from 35% to 26%. Further, market capitalization has increased from $40 million to current $165 million. Mr. Davidson previously worked for Citibank NA for 30 years in various capacities and locations. His job experience included operations, corporate and investment banking and general management including Region Head for East and Southern Africa.

3. RICHARD ETEMESI, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & STRATEGY EAST AFRICA, STANDARD CHARTERED BANK

Richard has 13 years banking experience with Standard Chartered Bank Group in various capacities and different locations. His current role as Director of Finance & Strategy East Africa combines responsibilities for leading and coordinating delivery of operating plans, policies, and platforms for Finance & Strategy, which enables the region, implement its strategic and growth agenda in line with Standard Chartered Bank Group. Prior to that, he was the MD & CEO Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Ltd for three-and–a-half years and was responsible for the overall growth and development of the bank in Uganda.

4. BENSON WAIREGI, MANAGING DIRECTOR – BRITISH-AMERICAN INSURANCE CO (K) LTD (BRITAK)

Benson is one of the most experienced Managing Directors in Kenya having been at the helm of British American Insurance Co. for over twenty years. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree and is also a Certified Public Accountant, CPA (K). He previously worked as a Finance Manager and Company Secretary at the same organization (BRITAK). Prior to that, he was a Senior Auditor at Price Waterhouse.

5. MICHAEL JOSEPH, GENERAL MANAGER/CEO, SAFARICOM LIMITED

Michael has extensive international experience in the implementation and operation of large wireless networks.  He has been in this position since July 2000 and has been primary responsible for the re-launch of the company and its subscriber growth from approximately 20,000 at the time of re-launch to over 2.1million by Dec 8th, 2004. Mr. Joseph was previously the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for Vodafone Hungary where he was responsible for the implementation and operation of the company’s DCS 1800 network, including the installation of over 500 base stations, 2 switches, an Intelligent Network platform, and the introduction of Value Added Services like WAP, SMS and mobile internet applications. He was the Senior Vice President – Operations for International Wireless Communications (IWC) responsible for business development, negotiation, finalization, and subsequent project development and management in the wireless telecommunications field, including paging, SMR and cellular with operating responsibility for all of Latin America, including SMR and paging operations. Mr. Joseph has a B. Sc. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is a member of the I.E.E.E. and I.E.E. (U.K.).

6. MR. TOM MSHINDI, CEO, THE STANDARD GROUP

Mr. Mshindi is the Group Managing Director of The Standard Group, in charge of the Group’s operations. He has a wealth of experience in the Media industry spanning over 10 years and is holder of a B.A (Hons.) degree in Political Science and Literature from the University of Nairobi, M.A degrees in Journalism and International Affairs from the University of Nairobi and Columbia University, NY (USA) respectively. Before joining the Standard Newspaper group he previously worked with the United Nations in New York before moving to Nigeria, West Africa, in the communications department. Prior to this, Mr. Mshindi worked for the Nation Newspaper for 14 years in various capacities. At the time he left, he was the managing editor.

7.VIMAL SHAH, CEO, BIDCO GROUP

Vimal Shah is the CEO of Bidco Group a leading manufacturer, marketer and distributor of edible oils, fats and hygienic products. Vimal has transformed Bidco from a small and an unknown company to East Africa’s Most Respected Manufacturing Company. This is according to the PriceWaterhouseCoopers survey for 2004. In recognition of Vimal’s exceptional effort and contribution to National Development His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki recently awarded him with the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS). This award was presented during the 41st Jamhuri (Independence) Day Celebrations. This highly prestigious presidential award recognizes those who have played a major role in National Development since Kenya attained independence in 1963. In February 2004 Mr. Vimal Shah was honored by Harvard Business School to give a talk on the success of Bidco Group as one of Africa’s the most successful enterprises. As a result Harvard Business School is carrying out a case study on Bidco Group with an objective of creating a success model for other enterprises to follow.

8. O. P. NARANG, RESIDENT DIRECTOR & CHIEF EXECUTIVE, AGRO CHEMICAL & FOOD COMPANY LIMITED

O. P. Narang is a Chemical Engineer, having graduated from University of Delhi in 1961.  After working for seven years in industry, he joined Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India (IIMA), in 1968.  The Institute was set up in collaboration with Harvard Business School and is rated as one of the best in the world.  Completed two year Post-Graduate Programme in Business Administration in 1970.  For about three years, he was an Adjunct (part time) Professor at a leading Management Institute in Mumbai, India teaching Perspective Management or Business Policy to 2nd Year MBA students. He has worked for about 41 years in India and Kenya, with the last 10 years as CEO of Agro Chemical and Food Company Ltd (ACFC).  He takes a lot of interest in keeping himself abreast of the latest developments and changes in the field of Management. His main objective in attending the Business Leaders Roundtable was to get an idea of the new concepts and challenges in international business environment when globalization is the key element.

9. JIMNAH MBARU, CEO, DYER & BLAIR INVESTMENT BANK LTD  

Jimnah Mbaru is an internationally renowned investment banker who has made a remarkable contribution to the development of capital markets in Africa. Born in 1947, Jimnah was educated at Strathmore College and obtained his Bachelor of Commerce (B. Comm) degree from the University of Nairobi. After a stint in the civil service, he pursued a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at IMEDE (now IMD) in Lusanne, Switzerland, graduating in 1978. Since then, he has been associated with the development of financial institutions including the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) which he served as chairman for 10 years and Africa Stock Exchanges Association which he launched as founder Chairman in 1993. In 2002, he graduated from the University of Nairobi. Currently he is the Chairman And Director of several companies including Dyer & Blair Investment Bank.

10. DR. AMIT THAKKER, CEO, AVENUE HEALTHCARE

Dr. Thakker completed his internship at Kenyatta National Hospital and graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1993. In 1995, he joined Avenue Hospital to run the outpatient department, where he identified a need for provision of quality medical services to corporate clients and began developing ideas, which evolved into the managed healthcare plans now featured by Avenue Healthcare. Since 1995, Avenue Healthcare has expanded and currently manages six branch clinics in Mombasa and Kisumu. He was the Managing Director of Avenue Healthcare from 1995 to July 2002 when he was appointed Chairman & Group Chief Executive Officer, the position he currently holds. Dr. Thakker’s interests are Golf, Squash, Music and Literature.

 11. MR. JAMES MATHENGE, MANAGING DIRECTOR, MAGADI SODA COMPANY LTD.

James was appointed Managing Director of the Magadi Soda Company Ltd in April 2003, charged with creating a world-class organization on behalf of the full range of its stakeholders.  This includes managing a US$100m expansion project designed to deliver better and sustainable business. Magadi Soda Company is Africa’s foremost producer and exporter of Soda Ash and is a member of the Brunner Mond Group. It is situated at Lake Magadi, which is about 120 km South West of Nairobi. As well as being a major contributor to the economy of Kenya, the company provides a very high level of support to the local community. It maintains the Magadi Township with all its amenities, including water, a hospital and schools for its more than 3000 inhabitants. Prior to joining Magadi, James worked for 24 years at Caltex Oil, Kenya serving from 1998-2003 as Managing Director and Country Chairman. In this role he was responsible for an aggressive employee empowerment policy, which achieved 100% national workforce.  James has a Masters in Economics from the University of Nairobi.

12. MRS. JANE KARUKU, MD, CADBURY KENYA LTD

"Since joining Cadbury Schweppes, I think what I've enjoyed most is that I've been given big responsibilities as I go along, encouraged to stretch myself and to put ideas into action. You feel you belong, the challenges are enormous and when you achieve them you celebrate”. Jane was born in Kenya in 1962. She had always been interested in food and after her BSc in Food Science Technology at the University of Nairobi; she worked for a local dairy processor as a Production Supervisor. Later, she went to California to study an MBA in Marketing and came back to work in Kenya. Mrs. Karuku joined Cadbury in 1995 as a Brand Manager. She was in charge of Bournvita and Drinking Chocolate. In 1997, she moved over to production to run the factory. She was responsible for maintenance, quality and production, and for managing about 150 people. In January 2001 Jane became the Operations Director. Again it was more responsibility including buying and distribution in the East African Region. Then a year later she became the Managing Director.

13. JAGI GAKUNJU, CEO, AAR HEALTH SERVICES

Jagi was appointed Group Chief Executive of AAR Health Services in October 2003. He joined the company in 1992 as a Sales and Marketing Manager moving through the ranks in various management positions. He joined the AAR Board as Commercial Director in 1995, and was appointed Deputy CEO responsible for both Uganda and Tanzania in 1999, based in Nairobi. Jagi was then posted to Dar es Salaam, to head AAR Health Services Tanzania as Country Manager. He held this position for three years before returning to Kenya to take up his current post. His experience in the Health Management Industry was enhanced when he obtained a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration from Minnesota University, sponsored by AAR. Before joining AAR, Jagi worked for ALICO for 10 years and traveled widely to UK, USA, Jamaica, Trinidad, Greece and Cyprus on working assignments. Mr. Gakunju is a lawyer by profession having obtained his LLB at Nairobi University.

14. MRS. JYOTI MUKHERJEE, MD, SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES LTD. (STL)

In her capacity as Managing Director, Mrs. Mukherjee has grown and strengthened Software Technologies Limited to be the largest software house in the Eastern African region. She has grown the company to be a multinational corporation in three continents. Today STL’s own product brand, EHorizon is known for its flagship solution for HR systems.  EHorizon HR system has been awarded as the best HR system of the country consequently for two years. Jyoti holds a degree in Computer Programming & Management Information Systems and an MBA in Export Management and Business Management. She has also Completed Oracle Development & Advanced Development course at Oracle Corporation, San Francisco USA.

15. AMOOL NATHWANI, MD, MARSHALLS (EAST AFRICA) LIMITED
