Alumni Powering Change: Leading USIU-Africas Journey Toward A Greener Campus
By Maryann Wangari
The USIU-Africa Library stands as a central hub for academic excellence, digital innovation, and knowledge-sharing. As the university continues to champion sustainability through its infrastructure and operations, the library is exploring renewable energy solutions to power its services more reliably and affordably.
To support this, the alumni are leading the Greening the Library Initiative aimed at installing solar power in the library. This initiative will improve the library’s energy efficiency, cut down on the electrical bills, and support environmental sustainability by increasing reliance on clean energy. The initiative has the potential to save an estimated KES 18 million annually in electricity bills, money that can be used for other development activities in the university.
Sustainable change can begin with small, intentional actions that encourage others to follow suit. This initiative supports USIU-Africa’s dedication to sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Climate Action (SDG 13).
In addition to transitioning the library from electricity to solar energy, the initiative aims to communicate that collective responsibility and community involvement are crucial in addressing climate change. Habits such as turning off unused lights, printing when necessary, and recycling all help foster a culture of environmental care on campus.
As this alumni-driven project grows, it highlights that USIU-Africa’s alumni are influencing change not just in their careers but also within the university spaces that shaped them. Together, they are not only saving energy but also building a sustainable future for future generations. The alumni who donate will be recognized by having their names featured on the library wall of fame as well as on the university's official website. Additionally, those who donate KES 250,000 and above will have their name featured on the university walk of fame.
The Alumni Association invites all members of the USIU-Africa community—faculty, staff, students, partners, and most importantly, our alumni—to support the library’s transition to solar energy through a voluntary, tiered membership contribution.
To donate, send your contribution via M-Pesa using Paybill Number: 516900 and Account Name: LIBRARY. For inquiries about the initiative, contact alumni@usiu.ac.ke or call +254 781 867 602 / +254 721 440 009. You can also learn more by visiting www.tinyurl.com/USIU-GLI.
